The round lathe is much easier to turn the middle out than on the oval lathe. I go to back to the oval chuck now and mount the blank with the bottom tenon in the oval chuck.
Again, rotate the blank to make sure it clears the tool rest. With the light behind the blank turn the lathe on. Set the tool rest so the gouge is cutting exactly at this point. If the inside oval is not cut at the same point as the outside, the walls of the oval will not be uniform. Lesson two. The taller the oval bowl the harder it is to turn.
Thus a three inch high oval bowl is easier to turn than a 5 inch high oval bowl. Making cuts parallel to the face of the oval is fairly easy. Making cuts perpendicular to the face of the chuck is harder. Lesson three. Once the tool rest height is fixed I turn the inside of the blank oval. The center has already been turned out so you are just turning the ends.
This is an interrupted cut and is somewhat difficult. There will be a ridge on the bottom at each end that can't be turned out now. The inside center tenon is left because it is needed for finish turning later.
I use a chisel and a dremel to remove these end ridges. After the wet blank is taken off the lathe I wax the end grain and dry it like I dry all my blanks. Finish turning. The oval blank will have moved during the drying process. I use a big disk that is on a face plate and put it on the lathe. I bring the tail stock up and hold the oval blank on the disk with the top of the oval on the disk towards the headstock. I measure the two ends and the two sides and get the blank centered.
Once centered, I turn the tenon on the bottom true round. I next put the Talon chuck on the lathe and put the bottom tenon in the chuck. I now true up the tenon on the inside of the oval. I mount the oval chuck on the lathe. Using a Talon chuck I grab the oval blank by the inside tenon.
The master line on the long axis of the oval is made vertical. On a shallow oval the Talon chuck can be loosened and the blank repositioned to true vertical.
On a deeper oval the collar of the oval chuck can be loosened and the oval chuck rotated. Make sure to tighten the collar screws of the oval chuck. I now finish turn the outside of the oval. At this time I turn the bottom edge of the blank flat do not cut into the tenon on the bottom of the blank and put a pencil line at the point of tranquility on the bottom.
This line will be needed later to turn the bottom of the oval. I now sand the outside of the oval to its final finish. I take the oval off the oval chuck and go back to the round lathe that necessary second lathe! I grab the oval by the bottom tenon and remove the inside tenon.
It is easier to turn it out on the round lathe than on the oval chuck. The oval bowl is now mounted on the oval chuck held by the bottom tenon. And same as roughing out, match up the tool rest height with the outside of the oval at the point of tranquility. Again, put a light on the outside of the oval and turn the lathe on. The point of tranquility will show up as an X in the shadow. The tool edge needs to cut the inside of the oval at the same height as the X on the outside.
Tighten the hose clamp on the tool post to fix this height. Description Terms of Sale Vehicle History. Shows light use and comes in a nice tool roll. All are around 16" long.
